24hrs du Quarantine

4/15/2020

Over the weekend we raced the 24 Heures Du Quarantine. The race was held at the famous Le Mans track and was a 24-hour race with 3 car classes: GTE, LMP1, and LMP2. We started practicing 2 weeks before this race since none of us have ran on this track since new tire model was release, we had to work on a setup from scratch which took many long testing sessions along with some frustration. We ended up choosing the Porsche 911 RSR out of all the GTE’s due to the speed and the consistency we felt with it.

The Race started at 13:00 GMT and we ended up qualifying in 2nd place out of the 32 team GTE grid. Harley Haughton, our temp driver, was the one to start the race out with a double stint and did a great job by keeping us in 2nd place and putting a gap to 3rd. We decided to fuel save during the hot stints to get rid of one pit stop by the end of the race. We continued to switch out drivers every 2 stints until the nighttime arrived and the temperature cooled down.

When the cool temperatures came in, we decided to triple stints to save time in the pits as we knew the tires weren’t going to drop off from testing. Going into the night the 3rd place team put some faster drivers in and were able to overtake us and we were falling behind. In the nighttime stint we inherited some bad floor damage that was unrepairable that would make the car 1-1.5 seconds slower a lap. Even with the damage we were able to keep away from 4th place. The rest of the race was luckily uneventful, and we were able to finish on the podium in 3rd place!
